Java Settings
Why do you need Java?
The Blackboard Collaboration tools (Virtual Classroom,
Lightweight Chat) now require a new Java Plug-in (J2SE 1.4.1 or 1.4.2)
in order to function properly. *(Note: Any prior version of the Java
Plug-in must be removed prior to installing J2SE 1.4.1 or 1.4.2 in order
for the Collaboration tools to function properly. Please read the following
instructions carefully and complete the appropriate procedures as they
apply to your computer.)
The Java plug-in should start automatically but if not Click
here and choose the operating system you have installed on your
computer.
In addition, you will need to perform the following adjustments
according to your browser version:
Settings and Helper Apps: Java and JavaScript must be
enabled in your browser (this should be the default in current releases.
- Windows users will also need to download the Java 2 Runtime Environment
in order to use the Collaboration Tools (Virtual Chat or Lightweight
Chat) available for download at http://downloads-zdnet.com.
- Mac OS 8 and 9 users running Netscape may need to download and install
the Java MJR 2.2.5 and the Mozilla MRJ Plugin for Netscape.
Choose the operating system and browser that you have on your computer
from the list below.

If you still have trouble with Java
- Close all applications.
- Go to Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove
Programs. (Note: Windows XP users will go to Start Menu -> Control
Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.)
- In the list of programs, choose "Java 2 Runtime Environment" and
follow the on screen prompts to remove the program.
- If you have multiple installations of the "Java 2 Runtime Environment",
you will need to follow the above steps for each version that is installed.
- Once you have completed the steps above, proceed to the steps below
under "Install new Java Plug-in (J2SE 1.4.1 or 1.4.2)".
- Install new Java Plug-in (J2SE 1.4.1 or 1.4.2):
Installing Java on your computer for the Fisrt Time
(Note: If you are not currently enrolled in a Blackboard course,
you may follow the procedure for "Manual Installation" described
in Step 6 below.)
Installing Java (Windows):
- Using Internet Explorer 6, login to Blackboard at http://blackboard.csusb.edu
using your assigned User Name and Password.
- Enter your course under "My Courses".
- Go to the "Collaboration" area (students can find this
in the "Communication" area; instructors will find this on
their "Control Panel".
- Click the "Join" button to the right of a session title
to launch the Collaboration tool.
- Automatic installation: The new J2SE 1.4.1 Java Plug-in should automatically
install. After it installs, you may need to perform Step 7
below to complete the process. If it does not automatically
install, follow the procedure in Step 6 below to download the installer
program and install the plug-in manually.
- Manual installation: The installer program may
be downloaded manually from the page that appears when a user joins
a Collaboration Session, or may be found at http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.1_01/index.html
or http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.4.2/index.html (depending
on your configuration, one of these may work better than the other,
but you should only have one of them installed on your computer). Note:
Use Internet Explorer 6 to download the installer. If you download
the installer manually, you will need to run the installer after the
download is complete. Make sure you note the location where you save
the installer on your computer, and then launch it after the download
is complete. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the installation.
Complete Step 7 to complete the process.
- Clear the JAR cache in the new Java Plug-in:
- To open the Java Plug-in Control Panel, do the following:
In Windows 2000, go to Start Menu -> Settings -> Control
Panel then double-click the Java Plug-in. In Windows XP, go to
Start Menu -> Control Panel then double-click the Java Plug-in
(XP users may also have to click Other Control Panel Options
in the left side of the Control Panel window to reveal the Java
Plug-in Control Panel link).
- Go to the About tab and check to be sure you are looking at
the correct Java Plug-in, the one you just installed (J2SE 1.4.1
or J2SE 1.4.2).
- Go to the Cache tab.
- Click "Clear JAR Cache" or "Clear", and
answer "Yes" when asked to confirm your request.
- Quit all browsers and other programs.
- Re-start your computer.
Note: After proper removal of the old Java Plug-in(s)
and installation of the new J2SE 1.4.1 or 1.4.2 Java Plug-in
is completed, the Collaboration tools should open and run normally.
(Remember to use Internet Explorer 6 when using Blackboard.)

Mac OS Users:
Mac OS users who have used the Collaboration tools in Blackboard prior
to 7/24/03 may need to perform the following procedure in order for the
Collaboration tools to work properly:
Mac OS X Users:
- Go To Applications -> Utilities -> Java -> Java Plug-in
Settings.
- Go to the Cache tab.
- Click "Clear JAR Cache".
- Close the Java Plug-in Control Panel.
- Quit all browsers.
- Re-start your computer - After completing these steps, the Collaboration
tools should open and run normally.

Macintosh:
You will need to have Java installed in order for certain areas of
Blackboard to function properly.
Follow these steps:
For Mac OS 9 and earlier, you'll need to download and install the MRJ 2.2.
For Mac OS X , you'll need to download and install Java 1.4.1 for Mac.
In addition, you will need to perform the following adjustments:
Collaboration Tools & Macintosh Users: Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X both
come with the plug-in you need for using the Collaboration Tools. Mac
OS 8 users may need the Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) plug-in available
at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75097 . Users running
Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 should us the Accessible version of the Collaboration
Tools. This link will open the Accessible version of the Virtual Classroom,
which resembles the Lightweight Chat. Links to items that appear in the
Virtual Classroom, such as items in the Course Map and Group Browser,
will appear in this version.
